I wore my new short red skirt today with a pair of high heeled ankle-high boots. My favorite pink lace bra is pushing my breasts out nicely in a thin Madonna t-shirt. It’s much too rainy and cold for this outfit today, but I drove instead of taking the bus to work, so I figured I might as well go for it.
A few hours into the workday a coworker instant messaged me:
That is quite an outfit you are wearing today. To me, your choice in outfit seems to be saying, “sexually available”.
The reason I am telling you this… is when you wear outfits like that… it is really… um… distracting. I really am trying to be good.
I am really uncomfortable… which I know is my own issue… since I doubt your intention is to make me uncomfortable…. and I don’t want to be seen as someone who goes around telling people what to wear (yuck on me)… it is extra hard on me since you sit right outside my office and I have a real weakness for noticing things…
This conversation left me feeling a little guilty. He’s not asking me to tone down my outfits, but it’s obvious that when I dress sexy it’s a real issue for him. My first inclination is to dismiss it. It’s his problem that he can’t keep his mind on his work, he said so himself. But why can’t I just leave it at that? My outfit isn’t inappropriate, it just happens to look really good on me.
A lot of the more honest men out there say that women in the workplace are, in fact, a distraction. The women’s libbers’ reply to that is that men should keep their libidos in check and just deal with it. After all, women never lose their concentration due to their sex drive, do they? (Yes, they do). I can see truth in both sides. But the fact is that women and men work together, and that’s not going to change. Attractions will arise. But do women have an obligation to keep the distractions to a minimum? Should we monitor our outfit to be sure we don’t catch the eye of the guy across the aisle?
Should I add this skirt to the pile of “not safe for work” clothing that is tucked away in the back of my closet?
